Linux installation

In this topic, we can discuss how to install linux in various method:

a) CD/DVD ROM

b) HardDisk

c) NFS/FTP/HTTP

e) Kickstart

Let discuss one by one:

Note: All these installation should need to have first/boot cd of linux.

a) CD/DVD ROM Based Installation Method:

In this method of installation you will have to download the iso images from the internet and need to write the iso images to an CD/DVD ROM's. Then you need to set first boot device as your CDROM/DVDROM replacing the harddisk which is default in the BIOS menu. This steps are common to all the installation methods.

Now you will see an linux screen. When you have decided to install linux through cdrom method just press enter or give "linux text". This linux text will take you to text method, where you can see all the option without mouse. You have to navigation between buttons using keyboard. Check the step-by-step installation for more.

b) Hard Disk Based Installation Method:

This is the effective method of installation when compared with the cdrom. As we should have iso image on our HARD DISK and write the first iso image as it is required to boot the Linux instillation. Now after the cdrom boots you need to type "linux askmethod" as you want to go to advanced linux installation mode. You will reach this screen:

Now you can give the path of the iso image containing folder like this:

If you are not sure of the path you can search by giving F2 Key and select the partition .

Problems: When you are trying to have iso image on NTFS partitions the you cannot able to retrieve images only FAT32 is supported.

c) NFS/FTP/HTTP Based Methods:

In this method of installation you need network where you have export the installation path in an NFS/FTP/HTTP servers. All that you have to do here is you need to select the method as NFS/FTP/HTTP and give the server's ip where you have exported the files and the path in which they exists. Where you need to specify the ip of your system as it needs to connect with the server. EG:

Setting up Ip address:

Now you can see how i have given the server ip and the path which i have exported in my /etc/exports file for NFS.

d) Kick Start Installation Method:

When you see in larger companies you cannot employ people to install O/S on each system. You can do one small concept called Kick start installation. Where in this concept the installation type, methods and packages will be previously mentioned. For creating and kick start installation need to type system-configure-kickstart when you are using a linux system. And when you are booting you system you can copy the ks.cfg file to an floppy and when booting the linux you need to specify "linux ks=floppy" as it will take the ks.cfg file there the floppy.
